Hello,

I'm trying to install Solid Works + Cosmos, and while I got SW to work I cannot get Cosmos to work. I went to this site, clicked the first link, entered the necessary info, and eventually got an email with these instructions:

Please find the enclosed COSMOS license file (SolidWorksStandaloneLic.lic). Follow the steps outlined in the attached instructions file to setup the license.

For Windows XP:
Go to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\
In the Address Line, after \All Users\ please type: Application Data.
Please find the SolidWorks folder.
Open SolidWorks folder.
Paste the license file from this email into SolidWorks folder.
You are now ready to use COSMOS.

So I d/l the attached file called "SolidWorksStandaloneLic.lic" to the folder they specified.

Now, I go to install Cosmos and one of the first things they ask is how I would like to get my license. The options are 1. wait and do it later, 2. and 3. some internet options, and 4. find the "License.dat" file.

I have tried 1 and 4 and both still result in me getting a dialog box that says that Cosmos is not authorized. When I say I am trying option 4, I mean I am renaming the .lic file to License.dat, but it doesn't help. I don't know what License.dat is or where I'm supposed to get it, or why I even need it if the email says that I don't need it.

Edit: I should also note that I am using Windows XP Home Edition, not Pro Edition, but I don't see how that's related to the authorization issue. Besides, I got the regular SW to work fine, its just Cosmos that is giving me problems.

Also, why can't I sign up for the solidworks.com forums? It asks me to enter my serial number when I register, and upon doing so it tells me that I have an invalid serial number!

hi fsakar,
I think you have to register the lic file. I would suggest trying one of the internet options to
register the lic file. If this does not work, you should contact the solidworks customer
center or StudentReg@SolidWorks.com and let them have a look whats wrong with your file!

Cheers,
Annika

Thanks.
Also, do you know if SolidWorks can be uninstalled and reinstalled on another computer, or is it "locked in" to the first computer you install it on? Thanks again.

Hey smile.gif

Each license is for one installation of Student Edition. Anyway SolidWorks
takes into consideration that systems crash and customer's upgrade their
systems; therefore, you are allowed to re-register your software one
more time in order to receive a new authorization code and
student/computer id. Once the software is installed on the new system,
open up the software and write down the new computer/student id.
Next, follow the below instructions for re-registering your software.

When installing SolidWorks on a new computer or the same one, but you
have changed operating systems, hardware or reformatted the hard drive,
you will need to re-register SolidWorks after you install it to receive
a new Authorization code. The original authorization code will not work
on a new installation of SolidWorks. You will have a different Student
Edition ID or PC ID for the new installation. Please visit this webpage
to re-register: https://swcustomer.solidworks.com

Be aware that you must uninstall the previous installation before
re-registering. This software can only be installed and used on one
computer per the SolidWorks End-Users License Agreement.

Make sure you have full administrator rights and turn-off or disable all
Anti-Virus, Spy-ware, Ad-ware, Pop-up blocker and Firewall software
while installing SolidWorks.
