Hello everyone,
First of all, I'm very happy to have found a student edition community! It's been very hard to find any technical support. Anyway, I'm using the Solidworks 2007 student edition on Windows XP Professional. This is a reinstallation, because I'm upgrading to a new computer; I made sure to follow the re-registration instructions and I validated COSMOS using the license.dat file that was sent to me upon doing so.
However, whenever I start Solidworks, I get this message:
COSMOSFloWorks authorization failed.
Please check License Administrator Tool in the COSMOS Applications Program Group.
When I check the License Administrator Tool, I don't really see anything I can do to fix the problem... All the features are listed as 'Available'.
Let me know if there's any more specific information I can provide!
Thanks,
Jacob

It seems like it's not just COSMOSFloWorks - I can't run any of the Cosmos suite. CosmosWorks authorization fails too when I try to open the program, even though the License Administrator Tool says that they're all available.
I get this message:
"License authorization failed for COSMOSWorks 2006 SP4.0. Please update your license."
Secondly, I thought I was using COSMOSWorks 2007? Is it the same program...?
It doesn't tell me why it's failed, or what 'updating' my license requires (or how to do this), nor does it tell me what to do to resolve the problem when I "check" the License Administrator Tool.
Are there any suggestions? Dealing with malfunctioning licensing safeguards is is quite frustrating and definitely eating into my productivity.

I am having a very similar problem.
I am trying to register my student COSMOSworks license and I am getting the authorization failed messgae everytime I open SolidWorks.
I called Solidworks several times to try and get help but they told me there is only email support for the student edition. So I filled out the support request form. It took almost 24 hours before I recieved a reply.
In the reply they told me to make sure I have followed all the instructions correctly, which I have, I've checked that a hundred times.
My conversation with solidworks went on for only 3 replys but each one taking about 24 hours. Upon the last reply I recieved they aked me to send them screen shots of mmy license loaction that I recieved from solidworks and computer details and a couple od other things.
I sent those back to solidworks and I have not heard from them since. I have sent them additional emails asking what the status is and still have not been replied to. It has been almost a week now. Very frustrating.
This probably doesnt help you much but this is the only place that I have found that mentions anything about the student edition of COSMOSworks.
Maybe someone that can help us will see these posts.

I definitely have a valid license file. The COSMOS License Administrator tool even recognizes it. The problem, it seems, is that COSMOS does not recognize that the License Administrator Tool has verified everything!
I don't think this is something that the reseller will have any idea about how to solve.

Hi all,
Very strange thing… I have a few things you can try:
-> Message: ''License authorization failed for COSMOSWorks Please update your license''
1. Launch SolidWorks.
2. Without opening any document Go to menu Tools > Options > Performance and enable “Use Software OpenGL”
3. Select Ok.
4. Now check the issue again.
-> Message: ''COSMOSFloWorks authorization failed'
I found something interesting. It seems that this message is a bug, and shouldn't
show up. So can u FloWorks? If yes the error message can be disabled in the following way:
• Tools (in the Menu bar of SolidWorks®)
• Add-Ins
• Remove the tick from COSMOSFloWorks™.
This error message should not appear any more.
The problem is that customers are normally not 'allowed' to call the SolidWorks hotline.
The first step is always to contact your reseller. If he can't solve the issue he is going
to contact Solidworks to find a solution for you. This is how it works. Anyway for students
there is- like already mentioned- the: studentsupport@solidworks.com
email support. This one is free and should additional help you with your issues.
BTW: The word 'critical' does work wonders if you write a email
especially if you
have problems starting the software or with a crash.

Hey,
One last thing I found for Student Edition Cosmos Motion 2008-2009 is this:
In order to license COSMOSMotion™ you need a hotfix. Please follow these instructions to download and install the hotfix:
After that you have checked that COSMOSWorks® and COSMOSFloWorks™ are working correctly.
Please download the hotfix for COSMOSMotion™ using the following link:
http://www.solidworks.com/sw/education/2357_ENU_HTML.htm
Please run the hotfix while logged in as administrator and after you have turned off all the anti-virus applications.
After receiving a message stating that the installation has been successful, please do not uninstall the hotfix.
Please run SolidWorks® and verify that COSMOSMotion™ is working.
If this does not solve the issue, I have not other ideas anymore
Then you really need to contact the reseller in order to get more help!
Annika

I was finaly able to get mine working just last night. After a while emailing back and forth with solidworks I was able to do a remote session with them and they helped me work out the problem.
The first time i followed the instructions it still did not work. With the help from solid works during the remote session we got it to work.
After the install I had to download the hotfix.
Here are the instructions they gave me:
Please try doing a clean install.
1. Login as administrator (not as a user having administrative privileges)
2. Turn off all anti-virus, popup blocker, ad-ware and spy-ware applications. (this step is very imprtant, i use AVG and we had to go into the control panel > Amin tools > Services to turn it completly off)
3. Uninstall SolidWorks and Cosmos products
4. Clean up registry by deleting registry key folders
HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > SolidWorks
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > SolidWorks
HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Srac and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Srac using registry editor.
(run registry editor from Start > Run > type "regedit" (without codes) and select OK. This will launch registry editor).
5. Restart the machine.
6. Repeat step 1 and 2.
7. Install SolidWorks and Cosmos
While installing Cosmos, Remember to select these options for license file while installing:
1. COSMOWorks Professional (if it gives option for selecting the product) (second option).
2. Select the option Cosmos License file (second option)
3. on next screen, select the 1st option (I want to skip this step and do the configuration later).
Complete the installation for all three products.
Place the license file in correct folder. Then Run SolidWorks, go to Tools > Add-ins and enable Cosmos products and check.
Hope this helps correct it for you too.

It turned out to be a problem with my license.DAT file. I wrote to the solidworks student registration email, gave them my host ID, and they sent me a manually-generated one. And now it works
OK, one problem solved...
