I would be most grateful to anyone out there more experienced than me who can advise me on the following installation problem.
I have recently purchased the latest student edition and hoped to install the software on my laptop so that i can get up to speed with the software wherever I am. My laptop spec is ok:- Intel Centrino Duo Core processor, Vista Home Premium, nvidia GeForce 9500M GS graphics.
The software installed fine with no errors. However, on starting SolidWorks after installation, the software starts, displays the opening graphic and the main screen, but pauses for the 'register now' message. There is 10 days in order to register, so I cancel the pop-up as I want to ensure that the software runs correctly before registering the software and 'locking it' to this laptop. When I cancel the pop-up, Windows immediately flags a message that the software has stopped working and has to close The message window that follows fails to give any explanation as to why the software stopped.
Reading the requirements spec. for SolidWorks I am concerned over two issues. Is this problem explained by the fact that I am running Vista Home Premium or could it be that despite having a good graphics card, it isn't good enough to run SolidWorks?
I am very worried as I have bought my laptop partly to train on SolidWorks. If necessary, I can possibly upgrade Vista to the next level, but I probably can't do anything about the graphics card.
Some help and re-assurance that all is not lost from somebody with experience would be very much appreciated.
Thanks very much!

Hi,
Yes the first problem is SolidWorks Educational Edition 2008-2009
just supports Windows Vista – Business and Ultimate versions only
and SolidWorks Education Edition is a 32 bit application (x32)
No 64bit versions of the EDU Edition (‘08-’09) is available
(I don't know which OS you exactly have)
The graphic card isn't certified but I think at least SW should run with it:
http://www.solidworks.com/sw/videocardtesting.html
I would suggest upgrading you OS to Business or Ultimate and try to run
SolidWorks. You can activate the licence- since it is possible to move this
licence to another computer smile.gif
I hope this information helps!

Cheers,
Annika

Thank you for your advice Annika. It has taken ages for my upgrade to Vista to arrive from Microsoft, but I am now running Ultimate 32-bit. Unfortunately this expensive upgrade has made no difference whatsoever, I still can't get past the registration screen when the application starts before windows says that the program has stopped working and will close. So frustrating and I don't know what options I have left. I so wanted to be able to learn how to use this software! If you or anyone else on this forum can offer any further clues, I would be so grateful to hear from you.
Thank you. Ian.

Hi Ian,
So you are now using Intel Centrino Duo Core processor, Vista Ultimate 32bit , nvidia GeForce 9500M GS graphics.
Is there a chance that you are using an ACER Laptop? There have been issues with that... if so uninstall the ACER
software eProtection and eData Security management and perform a clean uninstall of SolidWorks, with
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;290301
Then reinstall SolidWorks and make sure all Virus and Spyware is shut off.
Do the clean uninstall and new install also if you don't have an ACER machine.
If you are still having trouble afterwards, please post a screenshot of the error message that appears
after you try to register the software.

Cheers, Annika

Hi Annika,

Yes you are correct again! The laptop is an ACER and I do have the utilities installled as you suggest. I will follow your advice and post the result, good or bad! Hopefully I am getting closer!
Thank you for your time and consideration of this issue.

Ian

Hello Annika,

Great news!!
I didn't have ACER software eProtection installed but I did have eData Security management installed. I removed it from the machine and hey presto!! SolidWorks launches successfully! I had another Adobe application that I was having trouble with (Dreamweaver), and that now launches as well! This has been great advice for me and obviously anybody else with an Acer with these utilities installed encountering difficulties with sofware installs. Thank you very much for your time on this forum.

I have one problem left. Now that the application runs correctly, I thought I would register it (10 days of use permitted). You guessed it, registration fails, as although I have a serial no. and computer ID (generated during installation), when I try to register the software with SolidWorks and obtain an Authorisation code to use in the form, it returns that the serial number is invalid!! The serial no. can't be invalid as I installed the software using it and it is printed on the box! I started an e-mail dialogue with SolidWorks last Thursday 25th. Sept., but exchange of email is slow, and as yet they have not come back with anything positive. I have 6 days left to go before the software is locked, so positive news soon please! I am reading here that others have had problems with registration, but I haven't come across anyone who has exactly the same problem as me.

Cheers, Ian

Hi Ian,
Sorry for the late response- but I am not very familiar with licensing....
Was SolidWorks able to solve the issue?
Maybe its interesting for others to post the solution wink.gif
