Hi All.....

I am using solidworks 2005 sad.gif on my old computer, and it works just fine.

I have just bought a new computer with AMD Phenom quad core processor and win XP professional 64 bit.

Is it possible that the Solidworks 2005 will work with this new operating system ?

I don't want to spend hours loading and twiddling to find out that it does not work unsure.gif

Hi Dave,

2005 is supported on 64-bit hardware running the 32-bit OS.
2005 is not be officially supported on the 64-bit version of XP, so will not install or run out of the box. The main problem is that information does not
get correctly populated in the registry on the 64-bit OS. 2005 is supported on 64-bit hardware running the 32-bit OS though.
Full support of 64-bit Windows XP was announced with SolidWorks 2006.
Hope this helps wink.gif

Regards,
Annika

Thanks Annika, you have saved me a lot of struggle....although I faintly suspected that it might not work, so I did not try to install it on the new computer.

Anyone know where I can find a ..... cheap rolleyes.gif copy of solidworks 2006 or later which will run on this Win 64 bit software ?

I bought the new computer to speed the solidworks up sad.gif Doh !!

When I installed the 64 bit version of Win 7 I found all my programs bar Nero worked fine. In terms of speed this will depend a lot on the spec of your machine. Not much point using the 64 bit version unless you have 4GB of RAM or more. Thats not to say you cant use it mind.

Well, out of interest, I installed Solidworks 2005 into the new computer with the Windows XP professional 64 bit operation system, and ran Solidworks under the 32 bit section.

However, it did not use the full 4 GB memory in there.

The Solidworks program ran, but it was so very slow and unstable, i finally took it off the computer.

I have recently bought Solidworks 2010 64 bit version.
This now runs perfectly, without too many slowdowns. rolleyes.gif

I will find an additional 4 GB memory soon and hope that it will be worth the expence.

Another graphics card would be useful too, I have a G-Force 8800gt, it works, but does anyone know of a cheap and approved model of graphics card ?

Hey Dave,

I can't recommend any specific graphic card, be careful though that its a certified one...
http://www.solidworks.com/sw/videocardtesting.html
Check the listed graphic cards, maybe you find something good. I've seen a lot of people having trouble
with the wrong card or drivers!

Hope that helps!
